A simple card trick can be a great lead into algebra.

Begin by showing the class a two minute YouTube video:

Then repeat the card trick yourself to ensure pupils know how to carry it out themselves independently.

By extending the trick to different numbers of piles algebra can introduced to establish the magic numbers (m) by applying the formula: m = 52-11n where n is the number of piles in the trick.

A fun and interactive way to introduce pupils to algebra!

Susanne Lewis, Head of Maths at Desborough College, was inspired to suggest this teaching idea after hearing Dr Ted Graham (University of Plymouth) speak about 'Developing Algebra from problems and tricks' at our New Teacher Subject Days course.

Schools Programme members and course attendees can download the resources from the event in the PTI Staffroom.
